What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is a roughly 90-minute window each day considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology for beginning anything new. It is found by dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into eight equal parts and taking one part according to the day of the week. Because it depends on local sunrise and sunset, Rahu Kaal in Bengaluru differs from other cities.
How to Read the Timings Above
The panel at the top of this page updates automatically for Bengaluru:
- The status bar tells you whether Rahu Kaal is running right now, and how long until it starts or ends.
- The coloured strip is the whole day from sunrise to sunset, split into eight Choghadiya periods. Green is favourable, red unfavourable, grey neutral. The moving marker shows the current time — tap any segment to see its exact timing.
- Best time today highlights the most auspicious window, usually Abhijit Muhurat.
- Next 7 days lets you plan ahead, since timings shift daily.
Why Rahu Kaal Timings Differ in Bengaluru
Rahu Kaal is not a fixed clock time. It is tied to the actual length of daylight at your location, so it shifts through the year and varies between cities.
Bengaluru sits at 12.97° N, 77.59° E. Daylight here ranges from about 11 hours 22 minutes at the winter solstice to roughly 12 hours 53 minutes at the summer solstice. Each eighth of the day therefore varies between about 85 and 97 minutes, and the Rahu Kaal window moves accordingly.
This is why timings published for Delhi or Mumbai should not be used in Bengaluru — the difference can exceed 30 minutes.
How Rahu Kaal Is Calculated
The method is straightforward and has not changed:
- Take the time from local sunrise to local sunset
- Divide it into eight equal parts
- Select the part that corresponds to the weekday
The first part after sunrise is never Rahu Kaal on any day.
Rahu Kaal by Day of the Week
| Day | Portion of day | Falls around |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | 8th | Late afternoon, before sunset |
| Monday | 2nd | Mid-morning |
| Tuesday | 7th | Afternoon |
| Wednesday | 5th | Midday |
| Thursday | 6th | Early afternoon |
| Friday | 4th | Late morning |
| Saturday | 3rd | Morning |
Saturday's Rahu Kaal falls earliest in the day and Sunday's latest.
What to Avoid During Rahu Kaal
Tradition advises against beginning anything significant during this window:
- Signing agreements, registering property, or starting a business
- Beginning a journey, particularly a long or important one
- Marriage ceremonies, engagements, and formal proposals
- Buying gold, vehicles, or property
- Griha Pravesh and other housewarming rituals
What You Can Still Do
Rahu Kaal restricts new beginnings, not ordinary life:
- Work already underway continues normally
- Daily routine: eating, travelling to work, attending school
- Medical treatment and emergencies, which should never be delayed
- Prayer, japa, and remedies — including those directed to Rahu itself
Many families in Bengaluru simply shift the start of an important task by an hour rather than abandoning the day.
Choghadiya Today in Bengaluru
Choghadiya divides the same sunrise-to-sunset span into eight periods, each roughly 90 minutes, but judges them individually rather than marking a single bad window. It is the quickest way to find a favourable slot for something specific.
Each period carries one of seven names, cycling through the day. The starting period depends on the weekday's ruling planet, which is why the sequence shifts daily.
| Choghadiya | Nature | Traditionally used for |
|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Most auspicious | Any important work; the best window of the day |
| Shubh | Auspicious | Marriage, ceremonies, religious functions |
| Labh | Gain | Business, new ventures, education, investments |
| Chal | Neutral | Travel and movement; acceptable for routine work |
| Udveg | Unfavourable | Avoid new work; associated with anxiety |
| Kaal | Unfavourable | Avoid new beginnings; some use it for accumulating wealth |
| Rog | Unfavourable | Avoid; associated with illness and conflict |
If Rahu Kaal rules out your preferred time, the practical approach is to find the next Amrit, Shubh or Labh period from the table above and begin then.
Note: the periods shown on this page are Day Choghadiya, from sunrise to sunset. Night Choghadiya follows the same principle between sunset and the next sunrise, and is used far less often.
Gulika Kaal, Yamaganda and Abhijit Muhurat
Alongside Rahu Kaal, three further periods appear in the panel above.
Gulika Kaal
Associated with Saturn's offspring Gulika, also called Mandi. Traditionally avoided for new ventures, though considered less severe than Rahu Kaal. Some traditions regard it as favourable for remedial rituals.
Yamaganda
Linked to Yama. Avoided particularly for travel and for beginning anything intended to last.
Abhijit Muhurat
The one consistently auspicious window in the list. It falls around solar noon — the eighth of fifteen equal parts between sunrise and sunset — and lasts roughly 48 minutes. Traditionally considered capable of offsetting many other unfavourable influences, and a practical choice when an important task cannot be postponed.
Note: Abhijit Muhurat is not observed on Wednesdays in some traditions.
Planning More Than a Day Ahead
Because Rahu Kaal moves with sunrise, a time that is clear today may not be tomorrow. The seven-day table above shows Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal for the week ahead, so a date can be chosen before commitments are made.
For weddings, property registration or Griha Pravesh, a weekday table is only a starting point. A personal muhurat also weighs the birth charts of the people involved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rahu Kaal the same every day?
No. It changes daily because sunrise and sunset shift, and it falls in a different portion of the day depending on the weekday.
Can I travel during Rahu Kaal?
Beginning a journey during Rahu Kaal is traditionally avoided. A journey already in progress is not affected.
Does Rahu Kaal apply at night?
The commonly observed Rahu Kaal is calculated for daytime, between sunrise and sunset. Night-time divisions exist in some traditions but are rarely used in daily practice.
What is the difference between Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya?
Rahu Kaal marks one specific unfavourable window each day. Choghadiya assesses all eight parts of the day, showing which are favourable and which are not, so it is more useful for finding a good time rather than only avoiding a bad one.
Which Choghadiya is best for starting new work?
Amrit is considered the most auspicious, followed by Shubh and Labh. Where a task cannot wait, Abhijit Muhurat around midday is the usual alternative.
What if something important falls in Rahu Kaal?
Where the timing cannot be moved, Abhijit Muhurat is often chosen instead, or a specific muhurat is calculated for the occasion. For weddings, property registration, or Griha Pravesh, it is worth having the date examined against your own birth chart.
